FCC License Requirements
LMR radios operate on radio frequencies that are regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and as such, you are required to have a license issued by the FCC to use them. We are here to guide you through this process and ensure your satisfaction and success.
Frequency Coordination
The purpose of frequency coordination is to ensure the implementation of new radio communication systems while avoiding harmful interference with other existing or planned users in a specific location. Frequency coordinators are FCC certified to recommend the most appropriate frequencies for applicants planning to use LMR business radios. Applications for new frequency assignments and changes to existing facilities or locations must include frequency coordination. We offer frequency coordination as needed for your license type.
Our radios are preprogrammed with many frequencies for your use right out of the box (these will be listed in the user manuals). We will work to find frequencies in this range for your use. This makes set-up quick and easy. Custom frequencies can also be requested and programmed as needed. We can even preprogram new radios for you before shipment, if you so choose.
License Types
For our radios, the relevant licenses are:
Simplex License
- Licenses a set of available frequencies within the authorized radius of a fixed location. (This license type is commonly used for standard business locations, like hotels or restaurants.)
Itinerant License
- Useful for using the radios in temporary locations, such as in a singular state, within a group of states, or even nation-wide. (This license type will not require coordination, as the location is ever changing. An example of this license type would be construction sites.)
Duplex License
- This license includes a frequency pair, spaced for repeater use. Repeaters allow you to extend the range of your radios.
Obtaining a New License
To request a license, you will first need to acquire an FRN number from the FCC. An FRN, or FCC registration number, is a 10-digit number that is assigned to a business or individual registering with the FCC and is used to identify the registrant's business dealings with the FCC. To request an FRN number, click the link below and follow the instructions: https://fccprod.servicenowservices.com
When you receive your FRN, you are ready to apply for a license. To begin the process, click on the link below and fill out the FCC License Form with as much detail as possible. Please ensure that the contact email you provide on the form will be regularly monitored by the person who will handle the license process for you, as this will be the point of contact going forward.
- Once we receive the form, a Licensing Specialist will reach out to you via email to set up an appointment to call you so that we can gather more details and complete the application process. We will secure payment, then process the license request with the FCC.
- We will let you know when the application has been submitted. You may begin using the frequencies requested on a contingency basis for up to 6 months while your license request is processed. During this period, you will use the phone number listed on your application as your call sign.
- Finally, once the license is finalized and approved, you will be notified of this status and will be required to inform the FCC that you are using the frequencies as intended. (Construction Notification – Schedule K) This can be filed for free online by the FRN holder.
