Setup the HH 50 WX ST
Setup for the HH 50 WX ST is as simple as powering the radio, turning on the radio with the Power/Volume knob, choosing your channel, and setting the squelch.
Choosing your Antenna
Your CB radio does not work without an antenna attached. Out of the box you have several choices for antenna use, which each have their own strengths and weaknesses. Do not operate your CB radio without an antenna.
Portable Use and Using the HH 50 WX ST Outside of your Vehicle
To use your radio without a wire, you'll need an antenna that is not fixed to any one spot. We have two antennas that the HH 50 WX ST can use in these instances. If you will be outside of a building or vehicle speaking to other radio users, it is best to use a portable antenna.
Rubber Antenna
The HH 50 WX ST comes with a removable omni-direction rubber antenna with a BNC attachment that you can quickly install to begin talking right away. This antenna allows communication up to about a mile when outdoors with no tall obstructions around.
Telescoping 27 Inch Antenna
Available for separate purchase is the telescoping antenna with a BNC attachment, which provides longer distance CB radio communication outdoors, with the caveat that the antenna does not support NOAA Weather in the US or Weatheradio in Canada.
Fixed Location Use and Using the HH 50 WX ST Inside of your Vehicle
If you intend to use your HH 50 WX ST from inside of a vehicle or a fixed location such as inside of a scale house or other location where you intend to speak to other radio users outside of the building or vehicle, you'll need one of our fixed-mount antennas.
Full-Size CB Radio Antenna
The HH 50 WX ST is compatible with the BNC to SO239 adapter, which allows you to use the 50 WX ST with any full-sized PL-259 coaxial cable CB radio antenna, allowing you the full range of any 4-watt CB radio.
Mini Magnet Mount Antenna
The HH 50 WX ST supports the mini antenna from the HH 50 Road Trip, however that antenna is only available for purchase with the HH 50 Road Trip Kit, which is the HH 50 WX ST CB radio with the mini antenna with BNC attachment adapter bundled together in a convenient kit.
Powering Your Radio
The HH 50 WX ST can run off of either 9x AA Batteries running between 1.2V and 1.5V, or it can run off of DC power with the included 12VDC CLA (Cigarette Lighter Adapter) cable.
- Batteries are not included
- 9x AA batteries of compatible voltage and chemistry are required for cord-free use
- Batteries are not required if you are only using the 12V DC CLA to power the radio
- HH 50 WX ST is compatible for use with:
- 1.2V AA NiMH batteries
- 1.5V AA Alkaline disposable batteries
- 1.5V AA Lithium-ion batteries
- 1.2V AA NiCd batteries
- Higher voltages than 1.5V should be avoided as they may damage the radio.
Charging Your Batteries
The HH 50 WX ST comes with a charging tip for the power cable that allows you to swap from the larger power port to the smaller charging port on the radio. While charging is possible, please observe the following:
- The charging adapter should only be used with NiMH batteries
- Do not attempt to charge any other battery chemistry such as Alkaline, NiCd, or Lithium-ion, even if they state they are rechargeable; use an external battery charger that supports their chemistry instead
- NiMH batteries over 1000mAh capacity will charge slowly in the HH 50 WX ST. To charge large capacity batteries faster, use their dedicated charging equipment
- Do not use batteries rated higher than 1.5V as they may damage the radio
AC Charging Adapter
If you prefer to charge your CB radio from AC wall power, you can use the AC Battery charger for all handheld Cobra CB radios (US | CA)
