Family Radio Service (FRS) is a public-use radio frequency band set aside for short-range terrestrial communications. Most radios are used either for recreational purposes or for business purposes.
The FRS band is a UHF FM radio band between approximately 462 to 467 megahertz. It comprises 22 channels for personal communication open to the general public. They require no license to use and can interact with GMRS on a simple radio to radio basis.
The best terrain for an FRS Two-Way Radio is as open as possible, and within visual distance of the other antenna, with little to no obstruction from the terrain, buildings, or vegetation. Typically, these radios are small “walkie-talkies” and are entirely handheld. FRS radios are forbidden by the FCC to have replaceable antennas and cannot use repeaters.
Recreational Use
FRS radios are a great way to stay in touch for activities such as:
- Camping
- Carnivals
- Cruises
- Vacations
- Bike riding (for models with headsets, and/or VOX)
Business Use
FRS radios have use in businesses as well, especially with our professional PX radios. Both the PX280 and PX650 are suitable for professional use, with our newer PX280 having been built from the ground up for ease of use by teams. With its custom headset, its simple one-button press and the ability to go completely hands-free with VOX, the PX280 is an FRS radio that works well with many professional roles such as:
- Dining
- Hospitality
- Retail
