Why Should You Obtain a GMRS License?
A General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) license is required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to regulate the use of radio frequencies for two-way communications. If you plan to use a GMRS radio, you'll need a valid license before you can operate it. In 2017, the FCC reclassified certain radios that could transmit above 2 watts on shared FRS/GMRS frequencies as GMRS-only devices. GMRS radios can range from handheld models to mobile units.
Key GMRS License Takeaways
  • Applicants must be 18 years or older.
  • You cannot be a representative of a foreign government.
  • The GMRS license is issued to individuals only, meaning businesses cannot apply for new GMRS licenses (though some older business licenses remain valid, as they were granted before 1987).
  • The application process doesn’t require a test—just a one-time $35 payment, which covers a period of 10 years.
  • The license extends to you and your extended family members (spouse, children, grandchildren, stepchildren, parents, grandparents, stepparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and in-laws). Family members do not need to live in the same household.
  • If you have a felony conviction, you must provide additional details, but it doesn’t automatically disqualify you.
  • Lastly, you must comply with all FCC regulations regarding GMRS usage.
Benefits of a GMRS License
  • Higher Power GMRS radios offer greater power than FRS radios, allowing for longer range communication.
  • FRS Compatibility GMRS radios can communicate with FRS radios, providing flexibility.
  • Repeater Access GMRS allows you to use repeaters, boosting your communication range.
  • Affordability The licensing cost is relatively low, especially given the coverage it provides for your whole family.
