ATIS, which stands for Automatic Transmitter Identification System, is used on the navigable Trans-European Inland Waterway network and connecting waterways in several European countries to identify a vessel making a transmission. ATIS use is mandated by the Regional Arrangement Concerning the Radiotelephone Service on Inland Waterways (RAINWAT) agreements, which also prohibit the use of Digital Selective Calling (DSC) where ATIS is required, except in some near-coastal areas, or in sea-like areas of The Netherlands.
When in use, the radio sends out a unique FSK data signal, which contains the user or ships unique ATIS call sign along with vessel location, course and speed information. Ground stations pick up and monitor this information, making vessels trackable even in the most remote areas. This data transmission is sent digitally immediately after the person sending the message has finished talking and the PTT button is released.
ATIS transmission protocol is based on that used for Digital Selective Calling (DSC). ATIS transmissions have the format specifier field set to a value of 121.[2]: 44 and the ATIS digital signal is transmitted on the same VHF channel as the voice transmission, It lasts for 285 milliseconds after the PTT button has been released.
How do I obtain my ATIS number?
Contact the licensing authority in your own country, such as in the UK, it’s OFCOM, to obtain an ATIS number. They will require your name, vessel’s name, callsign and MMSI number. Only vessels with an MMSI number can apply for an ATIS number. This information will be sent to the corresponding licensing authority and then you will get the corresponding ATIS number. It’s a 10 digital number that can then be entered into your VHF marine radio. A marine dealer can help with programming your radio with desired ATIS enabled channels. As needed, ATIS can be enabled/disabled from the MENU. ATIS is only available on International models.
Will existing DCS functions work if I have my radio programmed with ATIS?
Your DSC will work and will not be affected by being programmed for ATIS. However, it's important to remember that DSC use is not permitted or supported on inland waterways throughout Europe. Also, scanning or dual/tri-watch is not permitted, so these features must not be used in ATIS mode.
Can I get my handheld VHF programmed if I don’t have an MMSI number?
Unfortunately ATIS numbers will only be given to boat owners who have an MMSI number. If sailing into Europe, it may be appropriate to consider purchasing a VHF/DSC radio, as all European countries will recognize this.
